Punk and Brexit Podcasts

In an attempt to get more experience for university, my CV, and to build a portfolio for journalism, I've decided to get involved with creating some podcasts on a couple of topics that are currently relevant in the world, or that I'm really interested in. I spoke to one of the library coordinators at sixth form and put together a plan for a two-sided podcast in which I would be discussing my thoughts; very similarly to what I do on my blog, but this time in a conversational format. The two topics I decided on were the impact of punk music and the upcoming Brexit negotiations. I am carrying out an extended project on punk music at sixth form already. The question I will be answering is "To what extent has the punk movement impacted attitudes towards social issues as a response to the politics of the time?"and I decided to incorporate some of my initial research into the podcast, and speak about what I've learnt so far. I always knew I wanted to do my project on something musically orientated, and the associations between punk, social crisis, and politics was a movement that I felt closely resembled my interests, in terms of people making a difference in society, and exposing the issues that are closed down by the establishment.
The topic that complimented my discussion of the punk movement was the politics of today, and so I decided to centre my subsequent podcast around the upcoming Brexit negotiations, including a rundown of the facts, the oppositional view, and what's happening during the 11 month transition period. I was never that interested in politics growing up, but I have developed a keen interest in it recently, as I have made the connection between politics, the world around us, and being able to truly stand up and make a difference. Some would argue that's what the punk movement gave us; the spirit and opportunity to make that difference.
Doing my first podcast was quite nerve wracking, since I've never been the best public speaker, and I sometimes struggle to articulate myself in scenarios where I am under pressure. I also found it quite difficult to ensure that I wasn't too opinionated in my views, and therefore I tried to maintain a largely objective view throughout. However, upon reflection, I really enjoyed having the opportunity to do this. I am always working towards improving my confidence. Someone once told me that there's a difference between appearing confident and feeling confident, and these podcasts have given me an opportunity to express myself, start to feel confident in my discussions, and get a feel for what it might be like if I go down a journalism career path. During my second podcast regarding Brexit, I felt a lot more collected and confident, and I hope that in the future I will be able to discuss a number of other different topics that I am passionate about. I want to thank Helen from the Fyi at college for giving me the opportunity to put myself out there, and try something a bit different, and I hope that my readers enjoy listening to my podcasts as much as I enjoyed partaking in them.
